GAME RECAPS

Loyola Thanksgiving JV Hockey Tournament

CHAMPIONS!

Game 1   Broncos 5          Evanston H.S.   2
Barrington opened first tournament with a game that was closer than the score might indicate.  After the Bronco's took a 3-0 lead, Evanston scored two short handed goals in the second period to close to 3-2 before the team scored the final two goals and come home with the win.  Top players were goalie Karl Ahlund and Taylor Pierce with 2 goals.

Game 2   Broncos  4        Lake Forest    1
Despite strong goaltending from the Lake Forest goalie, the Bronco's finally broke through with three unanswered goals at the beginning of the second period, led by Matt Zambole.  Then played strong defense for the rest of the game resulting in the final score.

Game 3   Broncos   4      Neuqua Valley   2
Playing one of the top Illinois high school hockey programs, Barrington scored the first three goals on power plays as there were numerous penalties on both teams in the physical game.  Neuqua Valley had the older, larger players, but in the third period, the superior conditioning by the Barrington team was evident as they easily resisted the pressure from Neuqua Valley.

Game 4  Tournament Semi-Final    Broncos   2      DeSmet H.S., Missouri    0
After winning their division, Barrington was then matched against perennial national hockey power, DeSmet High School from St. Louis, Missouri.  DeSmet had won this same tournament the previous two years, looking to make it three straight.  After a scoreless first period, Barrington's Luke Captain and Patrick McVicker’s scored two goals within one minute in the second period, both assisted by Ricky Alfonso.  It turned out that those goals would be enough for goalie Zach Schmitz, who turned aside 23 shots in the shutout.

Game 5 Tournament Final    Broncos   2      Neuqua Valley    1  (OT)
Beating a team as good as Nequa Valley twice in the same tournament is very difficult, but beating them with a number of players out of the lineup with injuries, such as defenseman Matt Dunbar, was a major feat.  The first period found Barrington killing penalties and through the stellar goaltending of Zach Schmitz, the game was scoreless until Barrington scored early in the second period.  That was the way the score stayed until Neuqua Valley was awarded yet another power play at the end of the game, which they converted to tie the game at 1-1.  In the 5 minute sudden death overtime, Barrington again showed their superior fitness and dominated Neuqua Valley until Austin Bostock scored off of a face off deep in the opponents zone.

The Loyola Thanksgiving Tournament is the prestigious high school tournament in Chicago and this was the first Barrington team to win the championship.  Congratulations to all the players and coaches!!
